SO WHAT THE HECK IS A THUNDERWEASEL ANYWAY?
Honestly I couldn’t tell you.
Starting back in the mid 1990’s, my brother Joel ran an old BB original Shambling Undead team he named the Tallahassee Thunderweasels (in fact he took the team when we attended the first Chaos Cup in Chicago). When Joel passed away from cancer in 2012, our gaming group wanted to start a small blood bowl tournament in his honor.
As a way to give back and remember him we made the Thunderweasel a charity event and named the tourney after his team. The first few events were just friends and family but over the years we expanded it out slowly to include others. The tournament is never large, but always a good time. This is a no pressure fun event that helps us remember Joel and help others (In recent years, we have started a tradition where a member of our club plays Joel’s team at the Thunderweasel or others tournaments like the 2024 Chaos Cup).
As the Thunderweasel is a charity event, half of entry fees and 100% of raffle items proceeds will go towards a local charity (The other half of the entry fee goes towards prize support). Previous events have raised money for the Ronald McDonald House of Pensacola, the American Cancer Society, and the Joel Ross Driver Memorial Scholarship at Florida State University.
So by taking part in the Thunderweasel, you are not only playing in a fun tournament and helping a local charity but also helping we, his friends and family, continue to honor Joel’s memory and keep our connection to him through game we all love.
