Draft tournaments require coaches to think on their feet. They won't know what team they will be using until minutes before the game kicks off. Forget forward planning, this is a test of your general coaching ability and will highlight those who can adapt quickly versus those who can't.
In the Mythical Mayhem, coaches enter the tournament without a play book to fall back on. They have no idea which team they will lead in each round or what skills that team has. Therefore, coaches must be able to be as adaptable as possible if they are to survive the merry go around and take the title at the Dragon's Draught.
Although team draft events are now played further north under the Team Tango name, it was originally started in Cheltenham as the Chimera Cup followed by the Manticore's Mug. All part of the Mythical Mayhem series. Its returning once more to Cheltenham with a third instalment - the Dragon's Draught!
The event will cost £15. This covers table hire and the prizes on offer. This is a non-profit event for the TO, everything paid will be spent.
This is a resurrection event so your team will reset after each game, ignoring any injuries suffered.
MM is draft style tournament, but instead of drafting players or star players you are drafting teams. On the day all of the teams and a team sheet for each will be provided. There will be one of each of the official GW teams (including the teams of legend) provided. In the unlikely event GW release something unexpected before the event, there will be 2 human teams. Attending coaches don't need to carry out any preparation other than bring with them dice, reroll / turn / score markers and a winning attitude!
For round 1 the coach draw is done at random as usual. The coaches randomly drawn on the bottom table will then get the chance to select which team they would like to play. Coaches will decide at the same time so as not to be able to outsmart each other. When they have picked, the coaches on the next table get to pick and then the table after that etc. If both coaches pick the same team, neither can have that team and they must pick again.
For round 2 and 3 it's pretty similar, we start with the two coaches on the bottom table. They get to pick their teams first, then the second bottom table etc. Leaving the top table with just whichever team is left. You cannot pick the same team twice in the event, each round you must play someone different.
Team creation is done for you. The rosters will be available before the day for you to peruse and make a short list of possible choices. There will be a couple of basic rules followed for all rosters -
You might be thinking that you don't need to worry about skills . . . . but you'd be wrong! MM is a tournament of communal team building. Each round you get to add two skills to the team and they remain with the team for the next person to use. So by round 3 you will be using a team that two other coaches have helped to build.
Each round coaches start by tossing the supplied token with a green dragon and a red dragon side. Each coach then reveals one of the colours each round. If a Red Dragon appears, you may add a primary skill of your choice to any player without a skill on the team. If a Green Dragon appears, then the Dragon Draught instils its essence into one of your players. Each selection of Red or Green Dragon applies to both coaches, so if 2 Red Dragons are thrown, both coaches add 2 primary skills. If 2 Green Dragons appear then each coach must roll for two players on the table.
