Tournament Rules
Games will be played using current Games Workshop Blood Bowl rulebook, the core rules from the most recent NAF variant rules for Death Bowl
This year will feature a Rules review and update to align with the most current version and teams of Blood Bowl and the NAF Variant rules. We will seek NAF Approval for the changes being made and the goal to ammend the NAF Death Bowl variant rules to align with ours.
UPDATES:
1- Scoring / End of Team Turn
Touchdowns in Death Bowl in recent years have become a life threatening endeavor. Many great players have sacrificed themselves for the glory of that all important score, only to have the rowdy crowds turn game changing celebrations into bloodshed and injuries in the mayhem that follows each score!
Death Bowl officials in collaboration with team sponsors, have come together to provide a solution that will give a small amount of protection in the Endzones and keep the crowds at bay during these all important touchdowns. In each Endzone they have had walls built to provide such a barrier. This will prevent players from being pushed into the crowd in any Endzone only.
That said, being blocked into a wall by another player still comes with its own risks. If the result of a block directly into a wall leads to a player falling down they will fall in their current square and cannot be pushed, followed by an armour roll as normal. When a player is pushed back against a wall but not knocked over, make an armour roll on that player. If you break his armour the blocked player falls down and proceed to roll for injury.
2- Knockouts & Reserves
KO's will no longer automatically recover at halftime in Death Bowl. They will have many more opportunities to come back onto the field of play throughout the game, as in normal Blood Bowl. After each TD scored and at Halftime players will roll for their KO'd players to recover with the same applicable rules as Blood Bowl.
For those that are successful and any players in reserves they may return to the field of play up to a maximum of 11 players on the pitch per team. There will be a slight pause in play for those players to make their way to their Line of Scrimmage (Rolls for KO's and players being placed back on their LOS will happen in the same sequence as play resuming after a TD) Play will resume immediately with the next coach after the scoring team's coach, beginning their team turn.
With this change Bloodweiser Kegs will also become an available inducement during team creation to increase your odds of having those KO'd players returning to the field
3- Roster Creation/Max Players on Field
During Roster creation the minimum number of players required will remain at 12 players for each team. Teams will no longer be able to field their full roster and no more than 11 players maximum will be allowed on the field to start a drive. This will reflect the same rules as normal Blood Bowl.
Teams with ‘Swarming’ will have the opportunity for additional players to line up on the pitch at the beginning of the game and after halftime as in normal Blood Bowl. In addition, if their team has scored a TD they may roll for ‘swarming’ prior to play resuming as players make their way to their LOS.
4- Balls placement after TD
If the scoring team also has possession of the 2nd ball it will be ‘magically stripped’ and will also randomly enter the center of the pitch. Play will resume as normal from here.
5- Referees & Fouling
There are no Referees in Death Bowl. No referee worth their own skin would be caught dead trying to control the carnage that takes place during a Death Bowl match!
There is however a maximum of one foul per team turn but you cannot be caught or ejected for doing so! Secret Weapons that are hired for their teams will also not be caught or ejected at the end of each drive or after a TD is scored.
This is a resurrection style tournament where teams will reset after each game. No injuries, deaths, or star player points are collected. Therefore, you will begin each game with exactly the same roster.

2- Remove Really Stupid from a Pump Wagon (it runs really well!)
3 - One free Bloodweiser Keg
Game & Turn Time Limits
The schedule is tight so the time limits for games will be strictly controlled. This is the only way to ensure fairness for all competitors. The alarm which goes off after 3 hours and 30 minutes brings the games to an end. There will be a warning given with 15 minutes remaining, after which the table finishes the round of turns it is on but does not start another round. This prevents a game ending with an uneven number of turns for each coach.
To make sure all coaches get an even amount of time at play, a turn time limit of 3.5 minutes per turn will apply. When the time limit runs out the coach is allowed to finish the move of the active player only. This turn limit enables us to play 4 games of Deathbowl.
The games may finish in ties and there is NO OVERTIME!
Tournament Format
The tournament will consist of 4 games of Deathbowl following the SWISS-style format. In the first game each coach will be randomly drawn with an opponent and then each pair of coaches will be randomly drawn with a second pair of coaches to make up the four players required for a Deathbowl game.
Game results are only determined by the results for the whole table (i.e. there can be one winner, or there could be a 2, 3, or 4 way tie!). Tournament points are discussed below. The first round matches will be decided randomly. After the first round matches are complete, the game match-ups will proceed with 4 coaches facing each other on a table determined by tournament points and tiebreakers. Coaches may play on the same table as another coach a number of times but only face each direct opponent once!
Tournament Points
Achievement Points - ie. placement on your table.
1st Place 80
2nd Place 60
3rd Place 40
4th Place 20
This is DEATHBOWL - 1 pts per CAS no matter how it is caused (bombs, chainsaws, fouls, crowd surfs or blocks).
Ties share points e.g.
4 Way 1st 50
3 Way 1st 60 (4th = 20)
The number one factor in determining how teams place in the standings should still reflect their overall record and Table wins. While we feel bonus points for strong gameplay should still factor in, it should not outweigh the overall record of the competitors. It will definitely still play a part in determining placement but not override the standings completely.
Each coach’s total tournament points from game play will be used to determine each coach’s table opponents for the next round. In the event of a tie in the standings the following tie breakers will be used during the tournament and in determining the final standings.
# Tie Breakers
1 # Solo 1st place wins
2 TD +/- (Your TDs scored minus TDs scored by opponent on table)
3 CAS +/- (Your CAS caused minus CAS caused by opponent on table)
4 # Ties for 1st place
5 # 2nd place finishes
